Have you ever found yourself thinking in terms of โ€˜good foodsโ€™ versus โ€˜bad foodsโ€™? Youโ€™re definitely not alone here but it can become a harmful way to think about what you eat. Here are some ways to notice that thought pattern and change your relationship with food.

DO ANY OF THESE SCENARIOS SOUND FAMILIAR?

โžก๏ธ You decide youโ€™re only going to eat foods you (or the latest social media influencer) deem โ€˜goodโ€™.

โžก๏ธ You stick with this for a while but start to feel restricted before long.

โžก๏ธ You eat food outside of these โ€˜goodโ€™ choices, so youโ€™ve eaten โ€˜badโ€™ food and start to beat yourself up.

โžก๏ธ You tell yourself you are โ€˜badโ€™ for choosing that food. You say โ€˜stuff itโ€™, and binge eat since youโ€™re already off your plan.

โžก๏ธ You recommit to โ€˜being goodโ€™ and the cycle continues.

If youโ€™ve said, โ€˜are you talking to me?โ€™๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ, join the club! So many of us are constantly told which foods are โ€˜goodโ€™ or โ€˜badโ€™ and neither of these will help us reach our goals. We tend to cling to these promises because we somehow think that this time we stick to things and this time will be different.

Here is the actual truth, no food is really โ€˜goodโ€™ or โ€˜badโ€™. The sooner you start believing and practicing that mindset, the sooner youโ€™ll reach your goals.

If youโ€™ve ever viewed foods as โ€˜goodโ€™ or โ€˜badโ€™, youโ€™re automatically setting yourself up to go overboard on the foods you wouldnโ€™t eat when youโ€™re โ€˜being goodโ€™. If youโ€™ve ever thought, โ€˜well Iโ€™m already off plan so I may as well ruin things entirelyโ€™, you know what I mean. ๐Ÿ˜‰

What youโ€™ll notice is these thought patterns equate the foods you choose with the kind of person you are. You are not a bad person because you eat a donut ๐Ÿฉ and you are not a good person because you eat a salad ๐Ÿฅ—.

Once youโ€™ve started to think about yourself as a bad person, or not good enough, itโ€™s easy to slip into unconscious choices perpetuating that belief. Whether itโ€™s continuing to eat foods that donโ€™t support your goals or skipping the gym, when you think of yourself as โ€˜badโ€™ because of your food choices, it takes away future healthy choices you would otherwise make.

๐Ÿ’ก Who has just had an โ€˜a haโ€™ moment here??!!

So if โ€˜good foodsโ€™ versus โ€˜bad foodsโ€™ isnโ€™t the mindset move, how can you make choices you are proud of?

๐Ÿ’ฅStay tuned for Part 2 where this exact question is addressed.
